Prussian immigrant, Gustav F. Sauter, was a locally-renowned pioneer in the Houston restaurant industry. He opened Cafe Sauter in 1880, which was the first Houston restaurant to utilize electric fans for cooling, offer a deli (which can be seen above), and one of the first to cater to women.

The Preston @ Travis location seen above spanned 2 floors and included an upstairs ladies-only dining room and a rooftop terrace/garden area.

During its 35 years in business, Cafe Sauter was widely considered one of the finest restaurants in the South.

Sadly, the Cafe Sauter building has been gone for many decades and a parking lot current occupies the space.
