Then and Now: SW Corner of Main @ Prairie

The three-story building in the foreground is the Stegeman Building built in 1879 by its namesake, Frederick W. Stegeman. It was originally built with two stories and the third-level, visible in the original photo, was added in 1890.

As I’ve mentioned in past posts, Houston has a complete disregard of historical significance and a knack for bulldozing. However, there are still some extant gems sprinkled throughout the city. This southwest corner of Main and Prairie Streets is one of them. As you can see in the photo and the current-day Google maps Street View below, most of this corner is still standing.
